Unley House by Urban Habitats is a classic villa redefined with a sense of contemporary styling and a functional design vision.
The existing villa was originally situated on a relatively small plot of land and adjoined by another similar 1960’s style South Australian home. The design approach undertaken by Urban Habitats was to pay homage to the scale of the original villa, and look to realign boundaries to provide the occupants with additional living space. This resulted in the smaller home being demolished and a new single story home being designed and built on the smaller allotment.
The main villa was stripped back to the original brickwork internally, floors and ceilings were replaced as required and a complete rebuild was undertaken. Hydronic heating was installed through out, as well as a fully ducted reverse cycled air-conditioning unit to provide energy efficient heating and cooling solutions.

Urban Habitats focused their design around the creation of two modern wings for the villa home. The northern side of the home was linked to the remainder of the space through a seamless glass link. The form of this new wing was designed to utilise scale and form of the existing villa albeit with a contemporary barn like approach.

The additon is set across two stories. The lower level contains a three car garage, with doors being concealed through clever detailing of timber cladding. The upper level accommodates the parents wing and features views to the rear yard and private swimming pool.
The second wing of the addition was designed to accommodate the main living areas of the home. This built delightful space includes a butlers pantry, laundry , sitting area, guest bedroom and alfresco entertaining space. Careful consideration was given during the design phase to ensure a smooth transition from old to new.

Urban Habitats carefully selected building materials to ensure uniformity, quality and precision throughout the home. Oak herringbone floors, Matt Aluminium windows and doors, basalt flooring, timber veneer cabinetry, marble and stainless steel bench tops are a few examples of the quality finishes seen throughout the Unley House.
