From The Architect
The design of our Margaret River House is to be read as a contemporary piece of architecture set within a landscape dominated by coastal heath. The choice of materials responds both to the site’s exposure to a harsh environment whilst also creating a palette that is able to complement the surrounding vegetation, allowing the greens and silvers of the native heath to dominate the reading of the building. The plan of the house is driven by a desire for subtle separation of program whilst also ensuring each space within the house has its own individual connection and response to the landscape and views. East and west views are restrained to carefully framed views of the ocean and the national park whilst the northern aspect opens up to its immediate garden surrounds, allowing the pieces of program to extend into their respective garden ‘rooms’.
Margaret River House by MDC Architects is nominated for the 2019 Western Australian Architecture Awards – for more information on award-nominated project and the awards night held on the 28th of June, please visit the Western Australian Architecture Awards website.
