Conceived as a contemporary interpretation of a classic sports bar, KICKS by ZWEI, is a celebration of all things sport. Subtly referencing the built form of athletic arenas and sporting equipment, the space is presented like an empty playing field, waiting for the action to begin.
Located on the first floor of a Melbourne CBD residential tower development, and with sightlines down to a busy street thoroughfare from the balcony, the space is a young, playful contemporary design that rethinks the classic sports bar construct.
KICKS by ZWEI, is a celebration of the greatness of all things sport.
The space was broken into separate zoned areas by ZWEI, with a central bar facing towards the entry area. Familiar elements such as a pool table and Atari tabletop games are located around the bar to activate these small nooks, while larger seating areas are positioned towards the balcony space. A kitchen and restaurant seating area are situated deeper in the space as a quieter zone, and amenities were treated as a separate environment with strong locker room referencing in material and colour selections. Flexibility in allowing areas to open and close and creating zoned areas allow for separate functions and events to occur within the space.

KICKS is designed to be a space for a younger demographic who are inclined to come and ‘hang out’ and treat the outlet as a home away from home. The site is located in an established student precinct, and considers that personal living spaces are often compressed and maybe shared with many. Seating zones are intended to be relaxed and casual, allowing patrons to pull up a chair and join a gathering. A full kitchen enables the capacity to deliver a full menu throughout the outlet, with a distinct dining area also. However, the outlet can then transform for a sporting game into a large event space with standing areas and a focus on the bar offering.
