About

Rethinking Housing – when bigger isn’t better. How considered design can build community, sustainability and affordability.

Sustainable Design Engineer, Nick Bishop of NBE Consulting was the sustainability consultant on the recently completed Nightingale 1.0 project in Brunswick, Melbourne, designed by Breathe Architecture.

The Nightingale project broke new ground in reconsidering every aspect of the design, development and financing of the multi-residential developments to deliver highly affordable and sustainable apartments that foster community connection amongst residents. The use of shared spaces and facilities, requestioning the real need for some features of standard housing products, and a profit-capped development model achieve a critical nexus between affordability and sustainability.

Nightingale 1.0 is also one of the first Net Zero Emission multi-residential developments in Australia, complete with an 8.2 star average energy-rating and powered by 100% renewable energy.

Nick will share his experiences and insights from the Nightingale project, and his thoughts on future opportunities and what can be achieved here on the Sunshine Coast.

Jimmy Hirst from Polkadot Homes has spent the last few years of his life travelling the world exploring Eco Villages and the Tiny Homes movement, hear his story and find out what is happening here in the Sunshine Coast.

Drinks and Disruption events provoke healthy banter and discussion over drinks and nibbles.
