Exhibition: The Grand Section – A year-long study of Australia’s architecture
The Grand Section studio brings it’s exhibition “Girthy; with Slim Edges.” Having teamed up with Wandering Cooks to introduce a night of Australian-centric architecture, thinking and design, the exhibition will showcase the word from The Grand Section, a year-long study of Australia’s architecture, east to west.
Out of a recycled tent structure, this event broadens the conversation about architecture and Australia, putting Australia’s innards on display. Giving insight into the reality of the regional and remote areas of this country and the connection between environments, people and buildings.
Owen and Bobbie, architecture students at Newcastle University wanted to study their own country as a precedent for architecture rather than the traditional European, American or classical influences. They undertook a journey to slowly get intimate with Australia’s girth. They rode their push bikes 7650km over 10 months, had 19 ‘stops’, 19 exhibitions, pedaled 6,303,600 times, had an encounter with one aggressive horse, 12.5 punctures and zero ‘psychopaths’, all in one pair of shoes at an average of 12.5km/hour.
Between February and December 2017, these cyclists documented the Architecture of Latitude 25 across Australia. Stopping for one week in 19 places, the duo would engage with locals, document and analyse the place and its architecture, and present back their findings to the communities they stayed with. This cross section of Australia’s Architecture is unprecedented.
