Li Xiaodong: A Reflexive Regionalist Approach to Practice

About
Award-winning architect Li Xiaodong, founder of Li Xiaodong Atelier and Professor of Architecture at Tsinghua University. will reflect on his recent projects in China, which he describes as “reflexive regionalist architecture”. Here, to be “reflexive” is to be in dialogue with a situation, through which an objective understanding of the situation could be established. To be “regional” is different from the “picturesque” or “iconic” regionalist architecture, by which architecture is understood as a means to demonstrate a cultural presence as a fixed entity. Instead, he calls forth an understanding of the “regional” as the comprehensive, dynamic and sustainable condition of place, where solutions could be based on and emerged from.
Li Xiaodong is founder of Li Xiaodong Atelier and Professor of Architecture at Tsinghua University. He holds a PhD in Architecture from Delft University of Technology and taught at the National University of Singapore in 1997-2004.
Li’s design projects, known for being deeply connected with the landscape and local community, have been recognized worldwide and won many prestige awards. Among others, he has won ARASIA Gold Medal (2006), the 2009 AR Emerging Architecture Award, the 2010 Aga Khan Award for Architecture, the 2012 AIA Honorary Fellowship, the Culture category of WAF (Singapore, 2012), Architecture of Necessity Award (Sweden, 2013), and the inaugural Moriyama RAIC International Prize of Architecture (Canada, 2014).
