Melbourne, VIC, Australia
About
DENFAIR is a place for designers and design lovers alike to come together annually and experience the year’s design innovations first-hand. Hundreds of brands have displayed their collections at DENFAIR in Melbourne (June 14-16) every year for the last three years, and that opportunity will now be extending to Sydney (16-18 August) in 2018 after popular demand. An exhibition of the highest standard, intended to inspire and amaze all that pass through its doors.

If that isn’t exciting enough, this year the DENFAIR team have announced they will be expanding their offerings across Melbourne Design Week (March 15-25), working in collaboration with the National Gallery of Victoria to create the DENFAIR Design Loop. A week-long event in which a collection of Melbourne’s best design showrooms will be opening their doors to allow guests the opportunity to understand the process behind their most admired pieces.

Starting things off with a bang, DENFAIR have curated an impressive list of exhibitors for the Design Loop’s first year running. There will be fifteen showrooms to visit around inner-city Melbourne, boasting names such as Mark Tuckey, Oblica and Volker Haug. Event-goers can plan their way around the city using the interactive map provided on the DENFAIR Design Loop website.

The participating showrooms will exhibit their unique interpretation of this year’s prompt ‘Celebration of Material’ by communicating their ideas through an installation that showcases the relationship between a designer and the components of their product. Considering the vast array of styles and designers that are exhibiting this year, it is hugely exciting to be granted access into the inner workings of their practice.

Further investigations will unfold in response to the question of ‘how is design the catalyst for change?’ Discussing these ideas with architects, designers, makers and members of the public forms connections between a range of people who have a common interest in design. One of the goals of the DENFAIR Design Loop is to strengthen the link between creativity, business and community.
Several esteemed designers including Christopher Boots and Zuster, will be holding talks to discuss their craft and sharing some of the rationale behind their material selections.

A couple other events to look forward to will be a presentation from Industrial Designer, Charles Wilson, at King Living, and a manufacturing demonstration with Gordon Tait of Tait furniture. There will be several of our favourite furniture and textile showrooms – Jardan, Space, Ajar, Cult, Schiavello, Meizai, Designer Rugs and Halcyon Lake- displaying installations and hosting events throughout the course of the week.

All showrooms and talks are open to industry as well as the public, this is to engage as many people as possible in conversations around contemporary design. The events are free to enter, but it is encouraged to register online as ticket holding guests will take priority if events fill up.

Guests can expect to be enthralled by the history and philosophy behind the significance of material selection. Displaying these responses as both visual and tactile representations gives viewers a memorable experience of the process behind design and manufacturing. Every location will have DENFAIR officials and showroom staff ready to offer assistance and help guide visitors through the exhibitions.
With so much to look forward to in the design world over the coming months, it is wonderful to witness a bridging between industry and community that welcomes all to explore great design.
